In the novel, Marganin was described as tall and authoritative. Most
important he was Prevlov's underling in the Navy Intelligence and a
Lieutenant. U.S.
deep-cover intelligence agent. His real name is Harry Koskoski, and he was
born in Newark, New Jersey. The real Marganin was the son of tailors from
Komsomolsk-na-Amure. One of the few survivors when a Russian Kashin-class
missile destroyer sank in the Indian Ocean, he was rescued but later died.
Koskoski's face is surgically altered to resemble Marganin, and he assumes his
identity. Raised in rank to commander and promoted to chief of the Foreign
Intelligence Analysis Division after Prevlov defects.
In the film, Marganin is portrayed as a Soviet embassy assistant to non
other, it's chief intelligence officer, Prevlov. Again, the
producers didn't give Elya much room to help develop his character.
Which is a shame since Elya is now considered one of the most respective
Russian-American actors in the industry. His most recent performance
was in the television show, "The Agency" as Borovinsky. A Russian
paid informer by the CIA.
Below is a brief description entirely excerpted from
the press kit that was released to the press before the film initial
release.
