MODEL CHANGES
DURING STAGE 7 During STAGE 7, I was going to show you how to cover the boat deck with
mud and fit the deck benches. After much thought, I have decided to do
this in STAGE 8. Also during Stage 7, one of the deck "cowling" vents need
to be removed and placed to one side for future use. Please except my
apologies.
*Please
Note*
Always keep your model instruction booklet to hand at all times for part
numbers & reference.
*WARNING!*
If your
child would like to build this model, please read the instructions below
as there are many times that sharp tools will be used.
Hello again
fellow RTT fans. Welcome to Stage 7 of "Raise The Titanic!" - Bring The
Model Home. During Stage 7, there will be many changes that need to be
carried out on your model to make her more like the movie model. So here
we go! ! !
Well deck Cargo Crane The Titanic had 2
cargo cranes fitted to the rear Well deck. On the RTT movie replica, one
of the cranes is completely missing. Looking from the stern (and facing
towards the bow) assemble and fit the Starboard side cargo crane. When
ready, fit it to the deck with the boom (arm) in its "at sea" position as
seen below. A Deck Cargo Cranes Moving up to A Deck
promenade, you can then assemble and fit the 2 cargo cranes into there "at
sea" position as seen in the photograph. Remember that these 2 cranes are
smaller than the other cranes fitted to the lower decks. Fitting The Upper Deck
Structures Now its time to fit
the upper deck structures that has been assembled over the last two
stages. Starting from the bow and working back, place glue onto the
"Officers Quarters" with the fitted Bridge front and place upon the deck.
Hold the deck firmly in place or place tape over the section to hold down
and leave to dry. Next, glue the "Raised Roof" with its compass tower to
the deck followed by the 3rd funnel base, engine room covering (with
skylight), 4th funnel raised roof and funnel base.
Skylight "Brass" Coverings If you have decided
to fit the brass photo etched parts that can be obtained from
tomsmodelworks, now is a good time to fit the extra "Skylight"
sections. The best glue to use is normal quick bonding glue (super glue)
but beware not to over do it. Fit both coverings on the forward and rear
skylights. Deck Details Continued
Includes "Raised
Roof" Vents
The
deck of the Officers Quarters and 4th funnel areas have already been
detailed in the last few stages. Now its time to move onto the other upper
decks. Firstly, detailing the "Raised Roof" between the 3rd and 4th
funnels will be slightly different from the instruction booklet provided.
On the RTT movie model, some of the original vents were missing. I do not
know the reason behind this. Using the illustration below, we can now fit
the vents to the deck.
The vents that need
to be fitted can be seen in the instruction booklet that comes with the
model. They can also be seen on the illustration marked in black. The
vents that need to be removed are marked as ( X ). After the
vents have been fitted, you can then fit the compass tower into place
along with its stairs C16 and C17.
*Please Note*
The vents that you have not fitted to the
raised roof need to be placed to one side. These vents will be turned into
the Fo'castle vents that fit either side of the forward mast. You will
have 4 of these vents removed from the raised roof.
Moving onto the Engine Room skylight covering, you can fit the 2 cowlings
vents H17
into place. Then take parts number G27 and glue into position.
Along with the other funnels pipes that have not been fitted, parts C4
and C5 can be thrown away as they do not need to be fitted onto
the RTT model. Don't worry about the small pilot holes already drilled
into the roof, the MUD will cover those. Next you can fit the base of the
4th funnel and the 2nd class entrance into place. At the base of the 4th
funnel there is another water /air pipe G11 that needs to be
fitted. The part fits at the back of the funnels and stretches over to the
roof of the 2nd class entrance.
Funnels & Wires Now
you can fit the remaining 3 funnels into place. I find it is easier to
glue all the funnels and fit all the funnels at the same time. This way
you can line to funnels up so each stack does no appear to sit un-level.
When the glue has dried you can then cover the top decks (funnel bases
only) with the MUD. Please be careful as not to get the MUD onto the
funnels. The boat deck will receive its MUD in the next stage.
Now its time to fit the funnels guy wires.
Starting with the 1st funnels and working our way back will be the best
method. Before fitting the wires into place, check that the holes
pre-drilled into the funnels tops are not blocked. If they are, just push
a fine needle through to clear. Take each wire and push through the holes
and glue into place as shown in the models instruction booklet. After you
have fitted the wires to the 1st funnel proceed to the guy wires that were
for the 2nd funnel. These can be cut off level with the boat deck as they
will no longer be needed. Fit the wires then to funnels 3 & 4, but DO NOT
fit the inner skins and gratings to the tops of the funnels.
In
Stage 10, I will be showing you how to remove and fit some of the funnel
wires that have been wrecked.
Port & Starboard Side
Outer Promenade Walls
Includes: RTT broken
Promenade Wall (as seen on movie model) I must confess that I
seen the movie dozens of times. But only when I obtained the movie model
photographs did I notice that the outer Portside Promenade Wall had been
damaged by the fall of the 2nd funnel. This does not appear to be shown in
any of the movies scenes. The next step does NOT have to be taken,
but only if you want to have your model as close to the movie model as
possible.
Using the 2 photographs below, you
can transform the outer wall into the damaged section. Make a mark 40mm
along the raised wall of the PORTSIDE wall. Its along this side that you
will need to damage. Turning the wall over, you will see the cutouts of
where the Boat deck and A Deck sits into the molding. The cutout for the
Boat deck will be the TOP cutout. Very lightly cut into the molding, but
be careful not to cut to deeply and cut up to the 40mm mark. Next we need
to bend that plastic into shape to make that damaged section. My tip!,
using a hair dryer, warm up the plastic in the area that need to be bent
into shape. You can follow the photograph below that shows how the wall is
twisted by using a pair of long nose pliers OR tweezers. Be careful though
not to over do it. Don't worry if the molding along your cut splits, this
adds to the effect. Your "Raise The Titanic!"
Movie Model Replica So Far!
Wow!, she's looking good so far. In
the next stage, you will be building the tall vents that fit either side
of the forward mast along with the smaller cowling vent that sits just in
front of the No1 cargo hatch, so this will give your model the RTT
treatment. I have received some emails with regards to painting the model
during the building stages. ONLY parts that have mentioned during the
building stages need to be painted. When your model is assembled, then its
time to give the WHOLE model its basecoat color. After that, we can then
layer the colors to the ship. If you have any questions for me about the
model, you can send me an
email.
See you all soon in Stage 8
