Due to heavy
workload, I have been unable to assemble the cargo cranes for the rear
well deck & A deck areas as mentioned in update 5. These will be shown in
the next update.
*Please
Note*
Always keep your model instruction booklet to hand at all times for part
numbers & reference.
*WARNING!*
If your
child would like to build this model, please read the instructions below
as there are many times that sharp tools will be used.
Hello again
fellow RTT fans. How is your model coming along?. If you have any
questions or maybe some photographs of your own RTT model, why not send
them along to me. You can contact me on
raisethetitanic1@aol.com. I have been asked about tips on bettering the
1,350th kit. As you will already know, the kit is a stunning piece of
work. But modelers have craved for those extra touches to bring there
Titanic model to life. Brass parts are one of the many ideas. Simply
fitting these can add stunning effects to your kit and they can be
obtained at affordable prices from
www.tomsmodelworks.com. When fitting the parts, my top tip before
fitting them, wash them with warm soapy water. This will remove any
unwanted greasy marks.
Funnels 1,3 & 4 If you have read the classic
novel by Clive Cussler, you will already have noticed one of the major
changes for the Titanic. In the book, Cussler decides to remove the liners
huge smoke stacks. For the film, it was decided that the stacks were to be
kept. The massive funnels of Titanic towered some 68 feet above the boat
deck, with an elliptical cross section of 24ft X 19ft and weighed in the
excess of 100 tones each. The funnels in the kit are as close as you will
get them in this scale. Each funnels comes with it inner skin and funnel
top grating. The inner skins and gratings will need to be placed on one
side for use later in the models assembly. Take part number of funnels and
assemble as follows.
Funnel No1 Parts J21 and J22. You will not be needing parts (C15
and C10)
Funnel No3 Parts J15 and J17. You will not be needing parts (C10,
C5 and C4)
Funnel No4 Parts J18 and J24. You will not be needing parts (C13)
The ( C ) parts can be thrown away as
they do not appear on the RTT model.
Once you have assembled the funnels, number each stack and
place on one side. You must remember, each funnel is NOT the same
height, so keeping them numbered correctly is important. As you will
notice from the photograph that I have decided to remove the funnels
forward and rear steam pipes. These will be replaced using brass pipe, but
you do not have to follow this method if you don't want too. DO NOT fit
the inner skins OR gratings to the funnels. 2nd Class Entrance Moving to the stern of
your model, upon the end of the boat deck is a small entrance called the
2nd Class Entrance. Take parts J35, G29A, G29B and G19 and
fit together. Take a length of thread at 10 inches long and glue into
place. as shown in the booklet. Assemble parts G4, H21 and H22
and glue to deck roof along with ( 2 ) G7. If using
tomsmodelworks parts, assemble as shown below. Place assembled
section to one side. 4th
Funnel Base Moving onto the 4th
funnel base section, take parts J38, 18 and 19 and glue onto
part i10. You can then fit into place the deck details such as fans
and vents.Cut a 10 inch length of thread and fit to underside of
deck as shown in the booklet. Taking the raised roof section, you can fit
the deck details, but remember DO NOT fit the deck benches. Coat a
thin layer of enamel glue over the deck area and faintly sprinkle a layer
of scenic chippings over the deck.
*Please Note* DO NOT fit the funnel to the deck. You
can then place section(s) on one side for use at a later stage.
Engine Room
Skylight Sitting between the 3rd and 4th stacks lies the Engine Room covering.
Fit the dome skylight part B3 onto the boat deck. DO NOT fit
the deck benches. Assemble parts J5,J40,J6,H27, and H12
together. Take parts J27 and G21 and fit to tank. Mist a
light coat of light grey over part B2. When dry, fit into place. On
the top of the Engine Room cover, you can fit the 2 sets of windows J12
into a closed position. If using
tomsmodelworksparts, please assemble as shown in picture. The
Engine Room deck details will be fitted at a later date. 3rd Funnel Base Take parts 17,H13,H14 and G18 and glue together. Fit the
large vent, part H23A into the recess.
*Please Note* DO NOT fit the funnel to the deck. You
can then place the section(s) to one side for use in a later stage.
Raised Roof &
Compass Tower Take the raised roof section and clean. Place the item to one
side for a short while. In the middle of the raised roof, you will see a
small rectangular raised section. To the side is 4 small holes, these are
for the legs of the compass tower to sit inside. The compass tower is made
from parts H24A, H24B and B8, but if you are feeling in a
daring mood, why not scratch build one using the legs from
tomsmodelworks. To scratch build the main body of the tower you
can use either plastic sheet or brass. Cut a section 6mm square
with a thickness of 1mm. This will be the base of the platform. Cut
a length of brass or plastic sheet for use as the walls to a size of
20mm X5mm with a thickness of 0.05mm. Measure 1mm
from each end of the strip and mark a line. Again measure another 6mm
from these 2 lines and mark again. You can then bend the platform
walls into o shape using your long nose pliers or modeling tweezers. If
you have decided to make the walls from plastic sheet, top tip is to warm
the plastic up to prevent it from splitting. When you have bent the walls
into shape you can then glue onto the base. Take the legs from
tomsmodelworksset, bend into shape and glue onto the base. DO NOT
fit the steps onto platform. You can then place the item to one side for
use at a later date. Toms Model Works Skylight Covers Included with
tomsmodelworks detail set is the fantastic skylight covers. As
painting the covers supplied with the original kit is a bit of a pain,
using these brass sections will make life a lot easier. Paint a coat of
light grey over the frames and leave to dry. When the time comes to fit
them, it will make the plastic covers in the kit look more like dirty
stained glass windows of the skylight on a ship that's been sitting on the
ocean floor for more than 68 years as the plastic covers and brass
sections will have been painted with separate colors. Poopdeck Docking Bridge Moving to the Poopdeck on the stern of the ship, we come to a
item called the docking bridge. When Dirk Pitt discovers the Titanic, the
first close image of the sunken liner is when the subs lights dance over
the docking bridge and telegraphs. Take parts J10, C14 and C2
and glue into place.
*Please Note* DO NOT fit the docking bridge and step to the model.
This will be done at a later date as you will need access to fitting the
deck benches. Place item to one side.
Poopdeck Cargo Cranes Take parts G1A, G2A and C3 and glue into
place. When you glue the cranes to the deck, make sure that the cargo
crane booms are sitting in a horizontal STORED position as seen in the
photograph. The Propellers Sitting on the stern of this great vessel, there sits 3
of the largest propellers fitted to any liner. The outer 3 bladed
propellers are 23 feet in diameter, while the middle 4 bladed has a size
of 16 feet. Take the parts from there tree and clean. You can then glue
the propellers to there fins. Each screw can be seated as seen in the
photograph. Deck Benches I have decided to leave the good bit till last. If you have opted
to use
tomsmodelworks deck benches for your model, please follow Toms
guide to assembling the benches. You will need to make a total of 37
for your RTT model. You do not have to use the brass replacement benches,
the kits benches are just as good. But if you wish to use Toms benches,
please build them with care as you do not have many spare benches. They
will certainly take time to make, but the end result is worth it.
